Leatherback Tagging
Fisheries Officer Ralph Wilkins and Nick Reed of the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network attended a 5 day training seminar sponsored by WIDECAST and Nature Seekers held in Trinidad in April 2005 , where they joined persons from around the Caribbean to learn about tagging leatherbacks. Following the training seminar the two returned and began training individuals of the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network.
On the night of Friday 9th April 2005 the first leatherback was tagged on St. Kitts on Cayon to Keys beach. Mr. Wilkins and Mr. Reed were accompanied by Kate Orchard, WIDECAST representative of the St. Christopher Heritage Society, Darren Browne, a Kittitian presently studying sea turtles at the University of the West Indies in Barbados , and several members of the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network to look for nesting turtles. The first leatherback was measured and one tag applied to each of the back flippers with the numbers WC2523 and WC2513.
Currently our volunteers are out tagging leatherbacks around 3 times per week.
